Meet the Musician

Devoted, Motivated and Versatile

Alethea Khoo is a Classically trained pianist who first debuted with the Municipal Band of Allentown in 2013 performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. In that same year, she won the SATORI composition competition with her original composition for flute and piano titled “Never More Shall Be,” written in remembrance of the innocent lives lost at the Sandy Hook, Connecticut shooting in 2012. Since she was young, Ms. Khoo has performed and competed as both soloist and chamber musician.

An avid chamber musician, Ms. Khoo has performed locally and internationally. In 2018, she performed as soloist and chamber musician in the MasterWorks Festival. When she attended the International Music Festival of the Adriatic in 2016, her ensemble performed Dvorak’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in the beautiful castles and churches of Italy. In 2015, Ms. Khoo also took part in a Window to Japan Chamber Music Residency, where she worked closely with the students and professors of Niigata University.

During her years at Susquehannna University as an undergraduate, she received a number of awards and scholarships under the tutelage of Dr. Naomi Niskala. There, she also gained experience playing with numerous vocalists and instrumentalists in recitals and competitions, such as NATS and Susquehanna University’s concerto/aria competitions. She worked closely with two other musical colleagues in a piano trio there for three years. In 2019, she received her masters of music degree in piano performance at Longy School of Music of Bard College and studied with Steinway Artist, Ms. Rieko Aizawa. She has premiered original works by Coleman Rowlett, Ben Nylander and Jonathan Shin. Ms. Khoo has taken part in lessons and master classes with Peter Serkin, Roberto Plano, Libby Larsen, Gilbert Kalish, Malcolm Bilson, Trevor Stevenson, Stefan Mendl and Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble.

In addition to her piano performance career, she also sings, plays flute, and dabbles on the harpsichord, organ, Irish whistles and bodhran. Ms. Khoo was Susquehanna University Lutheran Chapel’s student organist/pianist for three years and currently subs at various churches. In 2015, in the small town of Selinsgrove, she founded "Three Leaf," her own Celtic/folk group. They have performed in churches, wineries and other venues primarily in the Pennsylvania area. While in Boston, she collaborated with another folk musician in the group "Almost Irish."

In addition to performing, Ms. Khoo teaches piano in both private and community school settings, and seeks opportunities to share her passion for music with others!
